Car broke down in Serbia – what to do, step by step

A breakdown can happen to anyone – a flat battery, a tyre, an overheating engine or electronics. Make sure you are safe first, and only then deal with the car.

1. Move the car and switch on the hazard lights

If the car can still move, get it as far from the traffic lane as possible – onto a lay-by, the hard shoulder or a car park. Switch on the hazard lights immediately.

2. Vest first, then the triangle

Put on a reflective vest before getting out of the car. Place the warning triangle behind the car far enough for other drivers to see it in time – much further on a motorway than in town. Passengers should get out on the side away from traffic and wait behind the barrier if there is one.

3. Assess the problem

A flat tyre or battery can sometimes be fixed on the spot. If the car will not start, is leaking fluid, overheating or has been in a collision, do not keep driving – you need a tow truck.

4. Call a tow truck – or post a request in the app

In the Prevezi app tap “I need a tow truck NOW”. Your location is taken from the phone; enter where the car should go and what happened. The request goes immediately to tow trucks nearby, they send offers with price and arrival time, and you choose. Once you accept an offer, you see the driver’s phone number and follow the arrival on the map – the app works in English.

5. While you wait

If anyone is injured or the car is on fire, call emergency services first: 112, police 192, fire brigade 193, ambulance 194.
