Flatbed or wheel-lift tow truck – what is the difference

Towing companies use two kinds of vehicles. For your car it matters which one is used.

Flatbed

The whole car is loaded onto the flat bed of the truck and no wheel touches the road. This is the safest way and is recommended for cars with automatic transmission, four-wheel drive, low and sports cars, and for cars after a serious collision.

Wheel-lift (towing with one axle raised)

One axle is lifted and the other rolls on the road. It suits shorter distances and vehicles where the manufacturer allows it. With four-wheel drive and automatic transmission it can damage the drivetrain.

How to get the right tow truck

In your tow request enter the make and model of the car and whether it has an automatic transmission or 4x4. Carriers state in their offer what kind of truck they have, so you can choose an offer with a flatbed when you need one.
